Primary education has two stages. The first stage covers the first five years of formal education. The next four years of elementary school form the second stage. Unlike other countries, Czech pupils and students don't wear uniforms. And they receive school reports with the classification from 1 to 5. Classification 1 means you are excellent. Classification 5 means you are failed.
If young people want to continue their studies at a secondary level, they have to pass an entrance exam. There are three types of secondary schools in the Czech Republic. Grammar schools prepare the students for university study. And students must pass the school leaving exam called maturita. Maturita exam must be passed in order to apply to a university or to other institutions of higher education. Another type of secondary education are the vocational schools. These prepare students for practical jobs. There are also technical schools. Students are specialized in various branches of construction, engineering, information technology, economics, business etc. Some technical and vocational schools can be completed also with maturita exam.
There are two types of tertiary education. Higher education and universities. One of the oldest universities in Europe is the Charles University in Prague. It was founded by the Roman Emperor and Czech King Charles IV in the year 1348. Students can study in 17 faculties: there are five faculties of medicine, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Education, different theological faculties etc. The university is completed with a state exam where students defend their own thesis. They can obtain a Bachelor´s degree after 3 years of study or Master´s degree after 2 more years of study.
