Colors have an important role in our lives. A certain color can remind us of a memory, smell, place, feeling, day or even a time of a year. But in different cultures colors have different meanings. So what do colors mean?
Lets start with the color red. In South Africa red represents and is associated with mourning. The red in their flag represents the violence the people had to go through while fighting for their independence.While in India red is a very powerful and strong color. It has many meaning like power, wealth, fire, fear, love, seduction and beauty. It also marks an important day for women in India. You can recognize a woman about to get married by her red henna and red powder along her hairline.In China people wear red on New Years. It is also worn during weddings and funerals. It represents good luck, happiness, prosperity and other things.
And now let's talk about yellow. In many cultures such as different African and Egypt, yellow is associated with gold and that means money, power, success. In many African nations only people with a high rank were allowed to wear yellow because of its association with gold. In Japan yellow represents wealth, bravery and other good things. But, in France for instance the color yellow is associated with jealousy, weakness and betrayal. During the 10th century the French used to paint doors of traitors and criminals yellow. In Germany it does too, represent jealousy. And in China it represents pornography. In conclusion, colors don't mean the same things in different places.
